Hoylake's Lido was an outdoor swimming pool, not uncommon for the time on Wirral which was
located on the promenade. It was opened in June 1913 and rebuilt in the late 1920s at the cost of
£25,000; as yet i have not established why although i surmise that it was due to damage. The use of
the baths increased and for a short time the residents achieved a notoriety. In 1976 the Hoylake Pool
and Community Trust took over the running of the facility from Wirral Borough Council. The baths
finally closed in 1981 when many of the swimmers began using the facilities of the West Kirby
Concourse. Many people still remember the pool and the activities that went hand in hand. Kay
Morgan who was Women’s Captain in 1931 can still recall the lido’s time at the centre of the early
years of the club’s life, she commented:
“We used to wear woollen swimsuits but that was just all there was. There was no lycra. We went about
7 o’clock in the morning before we went to school. The temperature was about 50 degrees Fahrenheit (10
centigrade). There was usually quite a crowd of us and we were pretty tough".
Pinky Stabback competed in synchronised swimming at the club during the 1960’s, she recalls:
“In the summer they used to have what they called Aqua ballets in all the outdoor pools that were
still going strong in the 1960’s. But then gradually it became more serious. To be a good
synchronised swimmer these days you need the stamina of a middle distance runner, the agility of a
gymnast, the grace of a ballet dancer and a decent ear for music because you’ve got to have a good
sense of rhythm. And the heart of a lion because it is very very hard work.”
Hoylake Amateur Swimming Club has recently put together an exhibition which includes photographs,
memorabilia, and historic cine footage of the pool, filmed in the 1930's and 40's .
